A Bayonne bus company that served the community for more than a century made its final trip Saturday, ending a family-run operation that began in the 1920s.

The Broadway Bus Company, operated by the Massa family for three generations, shut down service after years of declining ridership and rising financial strain. Family members, former riders and longtime supporters gathered along John F. Kennedy Boulevard to watch the company’s last ride through the city.

Emil Massa, who has run the company for the past 30 years, said the decision to close was difficult but inevitable.

“I’m disappointed, it’s touchy, with the drivers and everything,” he said.

The company’s final ride traveled its traditional route - up JFK Boulevard, down Broadway and back - marking the end of a century legacy woven into Bayonne’s daily life.

NJ Transit will take over this route on Broadway beginning Monday, Dec. 1.
