Three adults and two children were displaced by a multiple-alarm house fire in Bayonne that sent smoke drifting throughout the city early Wednesday morning, officials say.

No one was injured.

The fire happened on West 42nd Street between avenues C and B and took nearly six hours to put out and closed several nearby streets in the area.

The Red Cross says it provided assistance to two families for temporary housing, food and clothing.

Bayonne Fire Chief Keith Weaver told News 12 New Jersey the fire was difficult to put out. He said firefighters had to deal with obstacles, including stored ammunition in the attic and solar panels that blocked firefighters from spraying water.

"It prolonged our operations and hampered our operations," Weaver said.

He says firefighters had to evacuate the attic and go into defensive operations in order to keep everyone safe.

Officials called it a smoky fire and advised residents in the area to keep their windows closed. Nearby residents said there was a blanket of smoke that filled the entire block.

"The blanket of smoke. The smoke was so bad coming down our house all the way down to Avenue C. You could not see. Your eyes were burning. You couldn't even see," said Andrew and Joanne Ferrier.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
