Police say a 9-year-old girl was attacked by a dog in a Bay Shore neighborhood over the weekend, leaving her with injuries so severe that her family is calling for the dog’s removal.
The incident took place Saturday morning on Lombardy Boulevard. According to Suffolk police, the child was in her driveway when she was attacked by a neighbor’s dog. She was rushed to the hospital with significant injuries.
“If it’s a vicious dog, they should do something. Maybe somebody else might get hurt,” said Frank Costantino, who lives on the block.
Despite the serious nature of the attack, the dog remains in the neighborhood. The Town of Islip has ordered the animal to be confined for 10 days, but neighbors are alarmed because the home where the dog resides is not fenced in, raising concerns about public safety.
According to Islip Town Code, animal control has the authority to remove a dog if it is unlicensed or if there is probable cause to believe it poses a danger.
Town officials confirmed the dog’s owner has been cited for failing to license the pet.
When asked why the dog has not yet been removed, a town spokesperson responded, “It’s an ongoing investigation, and we have nothing additional at this time.”
