Residents say newly adopted parking rules and fees at the Bay Shore Marina are too expensive for families trying to enjoy the summer.
Before the parking meters were installed, daily parking fees were $5 for residents without a recreation card and $10 for non-residents. Now, the meters cost 50 cents an hour during the week and $1 an hour on weekends and holidays.
The Bay Shore Marina, which overlooks the Great South Bay, features a large dock area for boat slips and Shipwreck Cove Spray Park.
In a statement to News 12 Long Island, the Town of Islip says in part, "The new parking program has eliminated long lines and congestion at the entrance to these attractions. For the most part, the parking program has been very well received."
Town residents can pay $30 for a recreation card that gives free admission to all town parks and beaches for two years. However, starting next year - even cardholders will have to feed the meters.
