Battery storage fire reignites concerns in Warwick

A battery storage fire broke out Wednesday afternoon at an industrial facility on Church Street in the Village of Warwick – prompting a large emergency response and renewed concerns from residents.
Officials say no one was injured, but questions remain about the fire’s status and potential impacts.
According to Warwick Fire Chief Andrew Lemin, crews were notified of a working fire inside a battery storage unit. Fire officials say they were advised by Convergent Energy and Power to keep their distance while a safety perimeter was established and air quality monitoring began. As of Wednesday evening, the company confirmed the situation was still considered an active event.
For many residents, the fire felt unsettlingly familiar. Some pointed to a major battery storage fire at a similar facility in 2023 that burned for two days. One parent said the repeated incidents raise serious concerns about safety and oversight.
Air quality readings have not yet been released, and officials have not confirmed the fire is fully out. The cause also remains under investigation.
