A school-supply giveaway event was held in Hempstead on Saturday to help children in need get ready for the upcoming school year.
Backpacks filled with supplies were filled with notebooks, folders, rulers and pencils to help students start the school year off right.
The event was held at the United Baptist Church on Clinton Boon Boulevard. Paster Sedwick Easley says the church saw a community in need and wanted to help. "Many of our parents have two or three children, some of our parents are single parents, so anything we can do to be of assistance to them, it makes a major difference," he says.
Organizers handed out more than 200 backpacks on Saturday. Some of them were donated by the New York Knicks.
