Advocates for the homeless say the system failed a man who died in Huntington Station Sunday while sleeping in a tent.
Friends of 22-year-old Orlando Moreno, a Honduras native, say he reached out to Family Service Center volunteers but was turned away because he was drunk. The Family Service Center, an independent organization that picks up homeless people and finds them housing for the night, denies the accusation. Organization officials say they would have called police to take Moreno to Nassau University Medical Center if they had seen him drunk. Early autopsy reports reveal a high blood alcohol level and suggest Moreno did not freeze to death, as originally believed.
Family Service Center officials say they helped Moreno Thursday night. He died in a tent in the wooded Huntington Station area where he'd been living.
