Officials say a gunman opened fire in the Garden State Plaza Mall yesterday, causing the evacuation of hundreds of shoppers and workers.

The 20-year-old Teaneck man's body was found in a construction area inside the mall.

Police say Richard Shoop fired at least six rounds in the mall around 9:20 p.m.

According to police, Shoop stole the gun from his brother.

Shoop was wearing a motorcycle helmet and fired shots at random.

Thousands of shoppers ran when the gunfire erupted, but at least 400 people were trapped inside during the lockdown.

The young man fired shots into an escalator area, but police say he didn't seem to be trying to shoot anyone.

Police say Shoop had a long history of drug problems.
