The man accused of stealing an Inwood Fire Department pickup truck while drunk, crashing and causing a fire was arraigned in court today.
Police say Wilson Ulloa, 22, stole the pickup truck from the firehouse early Saturday morning, drove it through the closed bay doors and fled the scene.
He later drove the truck over the Atlantic Beach Bridge, allegedly drove straight through one of the toll gates, then crashed into a utility pole on Mohawk Avenue. This caused a transformer to explode and start a fire.
Ulloa proceeded to run off and was eventually arrested in Long Beach, according to authorities.
Multiple PSEG trucks were on the scene Sunday to repair wires.
Resident Kerry Bennett was walking her dog when she witnessed the crash.
"I just heard the boom and the whole sky lit up," she said. "I only saw the ‘FD’ and thought it was a Long Beach fire car, so I had no idea who was in it. They got out and just left."
Ulloa faces multiple charges including criminal mischief, burglary, unauthorized use of a vehicle, grand larceny, DWI and several traffic violations.
He and his family covered their faces as he was released following the arraignment. His next court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday.
