Police hope that a new tip can help solve the case of a missing college student from Long Island who vanished 35 years ago.
Tammy Mahoney was 19 years old when she disappeared in May 1981.
Police believe the SUNY Morrisville student disappeared while she was hitchhiking near the Oneida Indian Nation reservation. Her body was never found.
A recent tip led police and the FBI to Chittenango. During a two-day dig and search, police recovered a 55-gallon drum and other items.
Mahoney graduated from Farmingdale Senior High School in 1979, before heading upstate to attend college. Her classmates remember that she loved animals and wanted to be a veterinarian.
Mahoney's mother and her sister still reside in Farmingdale.
The Oneida City Police Department issued a statement saying it concluded the search at the Chittenango property and that the results of the search are "inconclusive" at this time.
Police say "several samples of undetermined substances have been submitted to the FBI for analysis."
