Authorities have confirmed that human skeletal remains were found Friday evening in Rockville Centre.
Authorities say they responded to the location after a 911 caller informed police about the discovery at around 2 p.m.
Police found a body under a tent in an abandoned encampment within a wooded area southwest of Peninsula Boulevard and Lakeview Avenue.
The remains have yet to be identified. Authorities say they were taken to the medical examiner’s office for the investigation.
Residents in the area believe the remains may be that of a homeless person.
“Once in a while there is a homeless guy living in the woods. You will see them; one guy was riding a bike,” said Jeff Banfield.
A spokesperson for the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless provided News 12 with a statement. It said in part, "we must change the ways in which shelter is offered and the shelter models themselves, otherwise these tragedies will continue. These changes must start at the state level, as state regulations guide shelter models."
