Authorities: Woman killed in fire at senior living apartment complex in Plainview

Authorities say Plainview firefighters responded to the scene on Central Park Road just after 5 a.m.

An 84-year-old woman was killed in a fire that broke out early Sunday morning at a senior living apartment complex in Plainview.
Authorities say Plainview firefighters responded to the scene on Central Park Road just after 5 a.m. Upon arrival, they found flames coming from the second floor of one of the buildings.
Eight others were rescued and hospitalized. A 74-year-old woman was hospitalized with burns and was listed in critical condition as of Sunday evening.
Twenty people in total were evacuated.
Eight other departments traveled to Plainview to help extinguish the fire.
The Town of Oyster Bay Housing Authority, which runs the complex, told residents there was extensive damage from smoke and water throughout the building.
"Fire department did a phenomenal job holding the fire in check... absolutely heroic effort on their part," Assistant Chief Fire Marshal James Hickman said.
It was not immediately clear what caused the fire as of Sunday evening.
