A state comptroller's audit found that Suffolk County has been late in installing ignition interlock devices in some of the cars of convicted drunken drivers.
The report found 21 of 82 installations were performed an average of 15 days late. The report also found that monitors did not report the late installations.
The devices are required for anyone convicted under Leandra's Law or of other DWI offenses.
They require a driver to breathe into the device before starting the car. If the driver blows above the alcohol limit, the car will not start.
Suffolk County's Probation Department says it is looking at several ways to correct the audit's findings.
