Just one of Nassau County's 27 homeless shelters was inspected between 2012 and 2014, according to an audit by Comptroller George Maragos.
Maragos called the findings "very concerning."
"We're spending over $8 million annually to ensure that our homeless are being taken care of and we're not sure they are," he says.
Maragos conducted the audit after News 12 Long Island's report on the lack of heat at the Freeport Homeless Shelter during the winter of 2014.
The Department of Social Services did not respond to News 12's questions regarding the inspections. The department has sent documents to the comptroller's office showing that it has now inspected the 27 shelters and four motels.
