Parents were shocked to learn Saturday that arson was the cause of a fire that severely damaged a Selden elementary school.
Fire officials say the person responsible for setting fire to Stagecoach Elementary School apparently climbed in a window after pulling out an air conditioner. The gym was badly damaged by the intense fire and a roof in a hallway collapsed, according to fire officials. They say the center part of the building was affected most in the fire, but other classrooms had smoke and fire damage.
A school official told News 12 Long Island that a construction company is checking everything out. The district should know in a couple of days whether the kids will be able to come back in the fall.
