A suspect is in custody in a hit-and-run that ended with an East Meadow woman being dragged to her death, police confirmed Sunday.
Robert Fowler, 57, is charged with leaving the scene of the accident that killed 49-year-old Nina Sharma Thursday. Police say the mother of three had just taken out the trash and was standing at the edge of her driveway when Fowler's vehicle plowed into her. Sharma's body was found two houses away.
"We do believe he had knowledge that he struck this woman and certainly had knowledge that his vehicle was damaged," Detective Lt. Michael Fleming, of the Nassau Police Department, said.
Cops say pieces of a broken headlight from Fowler's 1996 Dodge van helped lead them to his Massapequa home. Ultimately, they say, the suspect's own brother turned him in.Authorities say they don't know if Fowler, who was arrested in 2004 for DWI, was drinking on the night of the accident. Police say charges may be upgraded at a later date.
