After several inmate deaths and a state lawsuit, the medical contractor at Nassau County Jail is leaving.
Armor Correctional Health Medical Services says it won't enter a bid to renew its contract.
"Good riddance," said Dean Hart, the head of Long Island Citizens for Good Government, in response to the news.
The announcement comes after New York's attorney general filed a lawsuit against Armor following numerous inmate deaths.
After that, Nassau Comptroller George Maragos refused to pay the vendor's July bill until the company provided data showing it had met the performance standards outlined in its contract. It's something Democratic Legislator Laura Curran said she asked for last spring.
"In the Legislature, we had asked for a report to be done," Curran said. "And the data supplied by Armor was shotty and inconsistent and incomplete."
Curran said the county must make sure that inmate care is consistent until the end of Armor's contract in May. A company spokesperson told News 12 that it is committed to working with the comptroller and sheriff's office to ensure a smooth transition.
