On this Teacher’s Appreciation Day, Applebee's is recognizing top teachers by county who are nominated by their students.

Students must submit an essay in person at their local restaurant explaining why their teacher deserves to be Teacher of the Year.

The winner in Suffolk is seventh grade English teacher Michele Russo of Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School.

Each winner receives a $500 check to use toward their classroom and an end-of-year class party.
