Election Day is just two weeks away and on Nov. 5. voters will see a few proposals on the back of their ballots.
One of them is Ballot Proposal 2: Cleaning public property. It covers sanitation and keeping New York City clean.
News 12 crews visited Fordham and saw trash along the streets and at a nearby park.
Councilmember Oswald Feliz told News 12 this proposal would help fix this problem.
"We have to make sure that the Sanitation Department has the legal authority to keep our entire city clean. Not only our residential communities and commercial areas, but also our parks spaces and our highways," said Councilmember Feliz.
A vote "yes" for Proposal 2 means the Department of Sanitation (DSNY) would have increased authority to keep city property clean.
This includes streets, parks, highway medians and the ability to hold street vendors accountable for not following sanitation rules.
This proposal would also allow DSNY to regulate how New Yorkers put out their trash for collection.
A vote "no" would leave the laws unchanged.
There were mixed emotions to this proposal on Fordham. Some people said it would help with the amount of trash in the city. Others said it does not matter what is done because people will throw trash on the street if they want.
Early voting starts on Saturday and that is also the last day to register to vote in the upcoming election.
