A vigil was held Saturday night in Amityville to remember the victims of the deadliest shooting spree in U.S. history. The group of Long Islanders didn't personally know any of the victims at Virginia Tech. However, they say the senseless tragedy hit home. College senior Raquel Crocker was at SUNY Oswego when she heard about the mass shooting. She said her reaction was: ?Wow, this could happen on my campus.? With poems and prayers, parents and children sent a message of comfort to the families of the 32 shooting victims. The community also planted a cherry tree, being called the Tree of Peace, in memory of the lives lost. The Tree of Peace was planted in the Garden of Hope on East Street, where two young Long Island residents are remembered, 14-year-old Danielle Baker and 17-year-old Jerome Hamilton, who were gunned down in two separate incidents last year. Baker and Hamilton's murders inspired some community members to start The Keep the Peace Foundation, whose goal is to teach kids about the dangers of guns and to urge families to get involved in their children's lives.
