An Amityville teacher was removed from school grounds after he was allegedly caught on an open mic making a racist comment about a student athlete during a high school football game.
The Amityville Board of Education held a public meeting at Amityville High School Wednesday after the white math teacher and athletic supervisor allegedly called a Black student a "monkey" during a live stream of a football game.
Parents spoke out at the meeting and demanded disciplinary action against the educator.
In a video obtained by News 12 Long Island, it appears that one can hear someone say the word "monkey" after referencing Howard Cosell, a sportscaster who was accused of calling a Black football player a monkey decades ago.
According to the district, the incident happened on April 24.
Amityville School Board President Dr. Terry Fulton read from a prepared statement, and earlier this week, Schools Superintendent Mary T. Kelly sent a letter to parents that said the teacher was removed from school grounds and has been assigned to home duty while they investigate.
Kelly also wrote, "This individual does not speak on behalf of our school district. We find the alleged statement to be reprehensible and not aligned with Amityville's values."
"The board of education expects district administrators, teachers and other staff to act as role models for the students and uphold board policies against racists, intolerance, discrimination and social injustice," Fulton said.
The school district says teacher is entitled to due process and that they will follow all relevant procedures.
But school board officials told parents they will provide an update to them at the next meeting scheduled for May 12.
