A Suffolk County school district is taking school lunches to the next level.
Rocky Point has taken several steps to elevate what's being served in their cafeteria, school officials say.
Starting this school year, the high school, which serves about 450 students per day, is only serving freshly squeezed orange juice, which is made on-site.
Also on the menu, the staff is making their own sauces and soups, including penne alla vodka and fall harvest soups, according to the district.
On some days, a fully functioning ramen bar and an açai bar are made available as well.
"They always ask for the extra toppings, the different fruit, we do mango, pineapple sometimes. We try to jazz it up a little bit,” said Shakia Hall, Rocky Point High School Food Service Director.
"It’s nice to engage with them and make sure they’re getting something they want to eat,” Hall added.
The district is part of the New York 30% initiative, which increases school lunch meal reimbursement for any school food authority that spends at least 30% of its budget on locally sourced produce.
