The American Lung Association has given Suffolk County a failing grade for air quality for the sixth straight year.
The study ranks Suffolk as New York?s second worst area when it comes to the ozone, behind Buffalo. Nassau is not on the list because there is currently no monitoring system in the county, but experts say areas around a county with poor air quality tend to have polluted air as well.
Officials point to pollutants spewed into the air from cars, factories and, most significantly, trucks and other machines that burn diesel fuel as the main factors for bad air. Officials are currently pushing for legislation that promotes the use of cleaner, low-sulphur diesel on Long Island. New York City and Westchester have already passed such legislation.
