Hundreds of airline passengers were left stranded in the New York City area Tuesday when American Airlines canceled 500 flights due to technical problems.
The flights were grounded so the airline could inspect the wiring on its MD-80 jets to ensure compliance with the FAA. The same problem caused American Airlines to cancel 400 flights two weeks ago.
Frustrated ticket holders on the 34 canceled LaGuardia Airport flights were left to make alternate travel plans. The airline said inspections could take 10 to 20 minutes for each plane, causing delays to last into early Wednesday.
