The suspected mother of a newborn that was abandoned in Hempstead stepped in front of a judge for arraignment Thursday.
Police say Xiomara Gamez, 25, faces felony charges after she allegedly left her newborn girl in the foyer of a Lafayette Avenue apartment building Sunday night.
The day-old infant was tucked inside a Timberland shoe box when she was found by a resident of the building. According to authorities, the newborn had her umbilical cord tied off with a piece of dental floss, but appeared to be healthy.
It was revealed in the courtroom that Gamez has six other children who live with her ex-husband. Gamez said in court that she abandoned her baby because of a cocaine addiction.
Gamez pleaded not guilty to reckless endangerment and abandonment charges. She remains behind bars, held on $500,000 bail. She will return to court on June 29.
