Suffolk police charged a man Wednesday with stalking for allegedly trying to lure a 12-year-old Mastic girl into his SUV last week.
Police say they were able to place 39-year-old Wayne McGowan, who was already on probation for heroin trafficking, at the scene because he was wearing an electronic monitoring device.
Authorities say someone who spotted McGowan?s red Hummer alerted them to whereabouts of the car. He was then arrested.
The stalking case was just one incident in a recent string that has frightened students and parents in the William Floyd School District. Residents are protesting what they call the dumping of sex offenders in the area. They say they have noticed an increased police presence, but say the problem is not going away.
The alleged victim?s mother says she is relieved the suspect was caught and that the family wants to put the incident behind them.
