An accused killer and serial robber was charged Wednesday on a 17-count indictment for a crime spree that spanned six months.

Acting Nassau District Attorney Madeline Singas says that 23-year-old Joshua Golson-Orelus, of New Cassel, stole approximately $11,000 in cash during armed robberies in Westbury, Hicksville, Jericho and East Meadow.

Police and prosecutors announced he is now officially charged with 11 of the 13 holdups that happened in Nassau between December and June. He's also charged with murder for the January shooting death of Jericho gas station attendant Hany Awad.

Orelus was arrested in June after he allegedly robbed a Citgo gas station on Union Avenue in Westbury. As News 12 reported, he was caught after a GPS tracker was slipped in with the money with which he made off.

At a news conference, officials didn't want to discuss specifics of the GPS, but acknowledged law enforcement has and does use the technology.

Prosecutors said in court that Orelus made statements incriminating himself in the crimes.

He was held without bail and faces life in prison without the possibility of parole, if convicted. He is due back in court on Oct. 5.
