Officials say a Southold police officer was injured when his cruiser was struck by an alleged drunken driver in Mattituck Saturday night.
It happened on Route 25. Police say Officer David Okula was headed eastbound when he spotted the driver, identified as Juan Santos, drift out of his lane while heading west. Okula slowed his cruiser to a stop, and Santos then allegedly struck the cruiser head-on.
Santos then backed up his vehicle in an attempt to leave the scene, but authorities say Officer Okula was able to stop him and remove his keys from the vehicle. Santos was tested and found to be intoxicated, police say.
The officer was hospitalized to be treated for minor injuries and has since been released.
Santos, 30, is facing felony DWI charges.
