? An alleged drunken driver who police say caused a fatal crash in Farmingdale was arraigned on manslaughter and DWI charges from his hospital bed Monday.
Police say 46-year-old Persi Esquivel drove drunk and killed 21-year-old Jason Shein, a medical student who was home visiting his family for Thanksgiving. According to investigators, Esquivel crossed the double yellow line on Conklin Street and plowed into Shein?s vehicle.
Shein?s mother, Betsy, spoke through tears as she described her state of disbelief to News 12 Long Island.
?At least he had Thanksgiving with us for the last time,? says Betsy Shein.
Shein was studying to be a doctor at the University of Miami. Now, his family is getting ready to hold his wake and funeral, scheduled Wednesday at Pinelawn Cemetery.
Police say Esquivel was on probation for a 2006 DWI conviction. He is being treated at NUMC.
The Sheins say they plan to be front and center at Esquivel?s trial to make sure he doesn?t get out of jail again.
