A suspected carjacker who allegedly led police on a high-speed chase throughout Suffolk County appeared in court Friday after his arrest the previous evening.
Delaware resident Darryl Jackson, 25, was arrested for allegedly stealing a Chevy Impala at gunpoint off Vets Highway in Islandia. An officer spotted the vehicle in North Great River, but the suspect allegedly refused to pull over and got on Sunrise Highway.
Cops say they then followed Jackson onto the Long Island Expressway. The suspect finally surrendered after 50 miles of pursuit in Southold.
Nearly 20 police cars and a helicopter were utilized during the chase. Police say they feared for the safety of innocent bystanders throughout the chase.
"We were very concerned for the public," says Det. Lt. Robert Edwards, of the Suffolk County Police Department. "There were numerous officers blocking off intersections and trying to keep the public safe."
To slow the suspect down, officers put spike strips on the road to blow his tires. Police say Jackson was at one point driving on just the rims.
Jackson finally surrendered by pulling over and waiving a white shirt out of the window, authorities say.
Jackson has been hit with a number of charges including weapons and drug possession. He is being held on $1 million bail.
