All eyes were on Phil Mickelson Wednesday for the final day of the U.S. Open practice rounds at Bethpage Black.
Mickelson's wife is home preparing to fight breast cancer.
"She has left me a number of notes, texts, cards, hints that she would like to have a silver trophy in her hospital room," Mickelson said Wednesday. "I'm going to try to accommodate that."
Mickelson said he?s counting on the support of fans to carry him through the week. Mickelson said he decided two weeks ago that he would return to Bethpage Black and make the most of this year?s tournament because he anticipates not being able to play for some time.
Mickelson is tied for a U.S. Open record of four second-place finishes and was the runner-up in 2002 when Tiger Woods won at Bethpage Black. He spent all of Wednesday on the green practicing ahead of the tournament?s opening rounds Thursday.
