Actor and Long Island native Alec Baldwin joined the fight against a proposed large-scale golf resort in East Quogue.
Named The Hills, the resort community is being considered on a 500-acre property near Sunrise Highway.
"Join us by telling your elected officials to kill The Hills," Baldwin says in a public service announcement.
Developer Discovery Land Co., of Arizona, is asking the Town of Southampton for a zoning change to build 118 homes, a private golf course and a clubhouse.
Environmentalist Dick Amper says the land is the largest privately owned Pine Barrens parcel left on Long Island. He also says the property is over an important water shed and the project should not go forward.
Not everyone in the area is against the proposal, though. Ronnie Campsey, owner of the New Moon Cafe, says that although he may benefit if the developer leases property from him for parking downtown, he believes the development has more positives than negatives.
Southampton officials say they appreciate Baldwin's interest in the project. They also say the draft environmental impact statement for the project is currently under review and will not have further comment until the project is complete.
Calls to the developer made by News 12 have not yet been returned.
