Open enrollment for the Affordable Care Act began Tuesday with premiums expected to rise across the country.
In New York, the premiums are expected to jump by 16.6 percent.
The average increase across the United States is about 22 percent.
Americans have until Jan. 31 to sign up for the New York State of Health exchange. Those without coverage must pay a penalty of 2.5 percent of their income.
According to a News 12/Hofstra poll, about 54 percent of Long Islanders say they would prefer to keep the Affordable Care Act in place with modifications.
A total of 36 percent responded that they want to repeal the health care law in its entirety.
