Hundreds of alumni of the Academy of Saint Joseph in Brentwood attended a reunion called “One Last Class” on Friday, before their school building gets a new look.
While the first floor will remain the same, the upper floors will be made into affordable housing units.
Pam Urubury attended the school and taught there, too.
She calls it “a second home” and said, “The sisters are so lovely.”
The school, run by the Sisters of Saint Joseph, closed in 2009.
Sister Mary Ann Cashin is a former principal of the elementary school.
She told News 12 she was feeling very “inspired” after hearing all the stories of women “who, as young girls, found home here.”
“It’s very affirming for us," says Sister Eileen Kelly, who was also principal of the elementary school.“As we say, we just hope whatever they gained here, the message, that they bring it on in their life. They’re our legacy.”
The school building is on the National Historic Registry.
