After barely escaping from his burning home, a Hicksville father helped save two strangers involved in a car accident Monday. Tom Falkenthal's home on Valley Lane erupted in flames around 3 a.m. while his family was sleeping. Tom, his grandmother, wife, daughter and the family dog all managed to escape safely. About two hours later, Falkenthal and his brother-in-law witnessed a car accident on Jerusalem Avenue. The men pulled a woman out of one of the cars that was leaking gasoline, and a man out of the other car that overturned. Falkenthal says he doesn't consider himself a hero, but he and his family think the night?s events were meant to be. ?I don't know, maybe this happened so we could save them,? Falkenthal said. The man and woman involved in the car wreck are doing fine. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but fire officials say it does not appear suspicious.
