90-year-old Darnell Davis retires from Rikers Island after almost 30 years
The New York City Department of Corrections today honored a 90-year-old Co-op City man retiring from Rikers Island.
Darnell Davis was a commissary manager at the prison for 29 years. "Pops," as he is known, worked to take care of all the income food for inmates to buy.
The DOC honored Davis by renaming the commissary complex after him. He was surrounded by officers, his daughter and great-granddaughter.
Davis' co-workers and boss will miss him, but say "Pops" will always be remembered. "He always talked words of wisdom. He's a great guy," says Warden James Perrino.
Davis says he will continue to live in Co-op City and has a trip to Orlando planned.
