A 9-year-old boy is recovering after being shot outside a building in Brownsville Thursday evening.
The incident happened around 6 p.m. outside 391 Bristol St., part of the Marcus Garvey Apartments.
Police say the child was hit in his right leg and taken to Maimonides Medical Center, where he is now in stable condition.
A neighbor who spoke with News 12 — but did not want to be identified out of fear of violence in the area — said the boy had come to the building to get a friend to come outside and play.
She said she then heard him yell that he had been shot.
The boy lives just across the street in another building within the same complex, according to what News 12 was told.
What led up to the shooting is still unclear. Investigators have not said whether the child was the intended target or if he may have been hit by a stray bullet.
Video from the scene shows officers taping off the area and searching for evidence for hours after the shooting.
Some neighbors say they heard gunfire and then saw a heavy police presence outside.
“I just feel sorry for these young people,” one neighbor said. “I have a 16-year-old and I’m always afraid for him out here. I just hope he gets better.”
Right now, investigators are looking for three people believed to be involved. They were last seen wearing all black, dark blue and light blue clothing.
As of this morning, no arrests have been made. The investigation is ongoing.
