Nassau Executive Ed Mangano is coming under fire from his opponents for issuing an eight-page mailer that touts his record but does not mention his indictment or the county's budgetary issues.
The mailer says the county and its executive are "protecting your wallet." It touts job creation and improvements to county roads and facilities that are "building a better Nassau."
The pamphlet makes no mention of Mangano's arrest on federal corruption charges or the county's continuing budget crisis.
A spokesperson for Mangano tells News 12 that the mailer took several months to print, has important information for residents and cost the county "less than the cost of a stamp per household."
Democratic Legislator Laura Curran, of Baldwin, says the mailer has little informational value and is nothing but a waste of taxpayer money.
"I was stunned that an indicted county executive at the height of a budgetary crisis is using taxpayer money for self-promotion," she told News 12 Long Island.
Don Gordon, of Hempstead, says he doesn't mind if the county spends money on mailers, as long as it helps to inform the public.
"I think we should have information of what's going on in the county," says Gordon.
Mangano, his wife Linda and Oyster Bay Supervisor John Venditto were arrested in October. Mangano and Venditto are accused of providing favors to a prominent Nassau restaurant owner in exchange for gifts including a watch and a massage chair.
