The Long Island Rail Road announced Wednesday it disciplined six employees after two trains nearly collided head on in August.

The trains came within 700 feet of hitting each other in Bridgehampton, the LIRR said in a report released Wednesday. News 12 originally learned of the incident through leaked memos. The rail road didn?t report it to authorities saying it wasn't required by law to do so.

LIRR management says the workers involved didn?t share information. Some of those employees underwent safety training. One was permanently barred from serving as a dispatcher.

LIRR says it is now in the habit of double checking its orders and clearing them with dispatchers and engineers.
