Family and friends of six fallen Long Island soldiers gathered in Brentwood Friday for the unveiling of a monument to honor their service.
The monument, which stands on Suffolk Avenue, bears the names of the six men; Sgt. Michael Esposito, Cpl. Ramon Mateo, Pfc. Jose Ruiz, Pfc. Jacob Fletcher, Pfc. Raheen Heighter and Senior Airman Paul Hawkes Jr. All of them are from the Brentwood and Bay Shore area and died fighting in Afghanistan or Iraq.
State Assemblyman Phil Ramos (D-Central Islip) presented the parents of Pfc. Ruiz with the honor of the New York State Conspicuous Service Cross.
The families said they prayed no more names have to be added to the memorial.
