A fast-moving fire ripped through a building and apartment complex in East Northport, prompting the evacuation of about 50 people.

The Red Cross and East Northport Salvation Army were on the scene at Larkfield Road to provide shelter for those who were left out in the bitter cold with temperatures hovering at 8 degrees.

The Northport Fire Department battled flames, snow and ice to get residents out alive.

The Red Cross is providing clothing and food for those who were displaced. The East Northport Salvation Army is providing shelter.

While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, Red Cross officials say this emergency highlights the need to be prepared for cold weather, and be smart about ways to keep warm.

To prevent home fires, officials are advising residents to use traditional heating methods and to not keep candles lit at night.
