Health officials confirmed five more cases of swine flu in Nassau County Monday, but announced no plans to close any schools.
Four of the latest cases are in students from Plainview, New Hyde Park, Merrick and Hewlett. The fifth case is an adult who lives in Port Washington. At this point, Nassau health officials say there is no connection between the cases and either travel to Mexico or St. Francis Prep in Queens, where the first of the New York cases broke out.
Still, many Long Islanders, even those who live near where swine flu has been confirmed, aren?t panicking.
Lawrence resident Michelle Jaeger lives a town away from one of the newly reported cases, but says she's trying to stay calm.
?There's only so much you can do,? Jaeger says. ?I can't let it take over my life and make me crazy.?
Both Nassau and Suffolk?s health commissioner say it is not necessary to close the schools. Suffolk County has 17 confirmed cases; the latest cases bring Nassau?s total to 23.
