Investigators are blaming 40-year-old Christmas lights and a dry Christmas tree for a fire that destroyed a Syosset home. Investigators say the blaze began at around 5:15 p.m Tuesday at the home on Nevada Street. According to the Syosset fire chief, a firefighter first noticed the fire and called it in. Firefighters say they arrived to battle the blaze within four minutes. The Syosset fire chief says the 80-year-old woman who lives at the home was making dinner when she saw the Christmas tree on fire. The woman was able to escape without being injured.
Investigators believe the age of the Christmas lights and the condition of the tree led to the fire. Long Islanders are being urged to check the conditions of both their Christmas lights and Christmas trees to prevent similar fires.
