A Long Island Rail Road passenger train carrying hundreds of riders collided with a work train in Garden City Park Saturday night. 

Authorities say 33 people were injured. Seven of those injured are railroad employees, and four people sustained injuries that are considered serious.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo's office says the first of three cars on the 12-car passenger train derailed about a half-mile east of the New Hyde Park station after the collision. There were about 600 people on board.

MTA chairman Thomas Prendergast said the front car sideswiped a work train, which caused the second and third cars of the passenger train to run off the tracks. The work train involved in the collision caught fire after the crash.

Train service reamins suspended in both directions on the Oyster Bay branch, while limited service has been restored on the Ronkonkoma, Port Jefferson branches. Customers are urged to use other LIRR branches, including Montauk, Babylon and Hempstead.

The National Transportation Safety Board will be on site to investigate the crash.

Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano praised first responders for their fast and professional response at the crash scene, and noted that ladders had to be used to evacuate passengers through rough terrain due to the elevation of the tracks.

Passengers aboard the train reported hearing a loud sound, then seeing sparks out the window and feeling vibrations as the train apparently left the tracks.
