It's Election Day, and 318 candidates will be going head-to-head for office in county and town races across Long Island.
In Suffolk County, Democrat Steve Bellone is seeking his third term as county executive and is running against county comptroller John M. Kennedy Jr., a Republican, and Libertarian candidate Greg Fischer.
For Hempstead town supervisor, Laura Gillen, who was the first Democrat to be elected to that role in over a century, is running for reelection. She is running against Republican Don Clavin, the Hempstead town receiver of taxes, and Libertarian candidate Diane M. Madden.
Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas, a Democrat, is seeking reelection and is being challenged by attorney Francis McQuade, a Republican.
New York held early voting for the first time this year, joining 30 other states that allow people to cast their votes before Election Day. In Nassau County, 30,082 people have already voted, and approximately 13,000 of them are registered Republican while 12,000 are registered Democrats.
In Suffolk County, 17,012 people have cast their ballots, and approximately 8,300 of them are registered Democrats while 5,100 are registered Republicans.
Polls close at 9 p.m.
