Three Long Island
students were the top winners in the Regeneron International Science and
Engineering Fair – the world’s largest high school science competition.
Rebecca Cho, of Jericho
High School, won two awards – the Robert Horvitz Prize for Fundamental
Research and first prize in Earth and Environmental Sciences, worth $10,000 and
$5,000 respectively.
Kevin Zhu, also of
Jericho High School, took first place in Computational Biology and
Bioinformatics, worth $5,000.
James Nagler, of Garden
City High School, was awarded first place in Embedded Systems, also worth $5,000.
According to Regeneron,
more than $8 million were given to finalists from around the world. The
competition featured over 1,700 young scientists representing 49 states and 63
countries across the world.
