The chief of the Kings Park Fire Department says police officers rescued three young women from an abandoned building at the Kings Park Psychiatric Center Friday afternoon.
According to Newsday, the women appeared to be suicidal. The newspaper reports that one of them had left a note to a friend saying she intended to kill herself at the psyschiactric center, and that friend called police, prompting a massive emergency response.
Newsday says the women were spotted on the roof of the former center's main building by police helicopter. Emergency crews grabbed the women from the ledge of the rooftop, the paper reports.
The women, along with four law enforcement officials, had to be decontaminated due to the asbestos in the building.
The grounds of the former psychiatric center have been designated as a state park, but the public is prohibited from entering any buildings on the property. Officials say the rundown buildings are filled with asbestos, which could pose serious respiratory hazards.
