New Jersey is taking a closer look at how social media affects children’s mental health.

Gov. Mikie Sherrill announced that Rutgers University will be home to a new Social Media Research Center.

The center will study how social media platforms affect children, including their mental health, anxiety, depression and addictive online behaviors.

Sherrill says the center will focus on research and facts, independent of social media companies.

The center will also develop online training programs for parents, teens and educators to help them keep up with the latest developments in social media.

The state is providing $500,000 in funding for the initiative.

Researchers will use their findings to recommend strategies to help protect children and keep them safer online.
