Suffolk County inmates turn the lens inwards with new photo exhibit

A new photography exhibit featuring work made by Suffolk County inmates is now on display at the Yaphank Correctional Facility.
The Suffolk County Sheriff's Office said 20 men in its Sheriff's Addiction Treatment Program spent five weeks learning portrait photography, writing personal reflections and creating collages exploring their past experiences, where they are now and where they hope to go.
The program is for nonviolent incarcerated individuals whose crimes were linked to underlying addiction issues.
“We have made it a priority to provide the men and women in our custody with opportunities to address their addictions, rebuild their lives, and prepare for a better future," said Errol D. Toulon, Jr., the Suffolk County Sheriff. "Over the years, we have incorporated unique programs including this photography workshop, and have found that they can be tools to help someone reflect and begin to see themselves as more than their addiction,”
The exhibit, titled 'A Part of Me Wants to Be All of Me,' opened on Tuesday.
The art is on view in the visiting lobby of the correctional facility through the end of September.
