Families in Patchogue honor loved ones lost to drug overdoses

More than 100 people gathered at Sandspit Marina in Patchogue to mark International Overdose Awareness Day to honor loved ones who died of opioid and fentanyl overdoses.
The event also served to raise awareness about the ongoing crisis.
The event was organized by Beading Hearts, a support group founded by Linda Nuszen after the death of her son, Adam, nearly 11 years ago. Since then, Nuszen has dedicated herself to helping parents and families navigate the grief that follows an overdose death.
“Addiction took him. Ultimately he did overdose,” Nuszen said. “And it was only since he passed that I've learned so much. It's not a moral failing.”
Attendees participated in a symbolic ceremony, writing messages to their loved ones on leaf-shaped cards before casting them into the bay.
For many, the event provided a space to remember those they lost while connecting with others who share a similar experience.
The annual event continues to draw families from across Long Island who seek remembrance, healing and community in the wake of overdose deaths.
